Why do my joints ache more after Frost Descent in Nanaimo? Late October brings wet, cold weather to the island. In TCM, cold and dampness slow circulation and settle in the joints. Moxibustion and acupuncture are traditionally used to warm the meridians, move stagnation, and ease cold-type pain.

Frost Descent in Wet, Cold Nanaimo: Why Your Joints Ache and Your Heart Needs Care

You wake up and the grass is white. The air feels damp, not crisp. Your knees feel stiff. Your lower back aches when you stand up. And you notice your sleep is lighter than it was a month ago. This is Frost Descent in Nanaimo — not the dry cold of the interior, but a wet cold that settles into the body and stays there. If you feel it in your joints, you are not imagining it.

Nanaimo’s wet cold: what it does to your body

Nanaimo is not dry in late October. The average rainfall in October is around 280 mm, and humidity stays near 82%. That means the cold here is a damp cold — the kind that makes your body feel heavy rather than sharp.

In TCM, cold causes contraction. Dampness causes heaviness and stagnation. When they combine, circulation slows down, and the joints — especially the knees, lower back, and shoulders — become the places where that stagnation settles. You feel it as stiffness, achiness, or a deep cold sensation that does not go away with a hot shower.

This is different from the dry, crisp cold of other parts of BC. It is the reason so many people in Nanaimo notice their joints more in late October and November.

Why 2026 puts extra pressure on joints and the heart

2026 is a year of “Water movement in excess” in the traditional calendar. In simple terms: cold is stronger than usual this year. The cold energy of the season is amplified, and it tends to affect two areas most: the joints and the heart.

For joints, the logic is straightforward: cold slows circulation. If you already have an old injury or a sensitive joint, this is the season it flares. For the heart, the traditional view is that cold can “tighten” the chest and put extra demand on the cardiovascular system. If you notice a feeling of tightness, palpitations when you rest, or a sense that your heart is working harder than usual in cold weather, it is worth paying attention to.

This is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to prepare — and that is where TCM therapies come in.

Moxibustion: warming the meridians, breaking the cold

Moxibustion is the burning of dried mugwort near specific points on the body. It produces a deep, penetrating warmth — different from a heating pad, which only warms the surface.

At our clinic, we use moxibustion specifically for cold and damp conditions. Our FAQ explains it simply: “Symptoms and diseases caused by cold and dampness will be the first choice to use moxibustion therapy” [SLBTCT FAQ].

Why it works for the joints: moxibustion warms the meridians, breaks stagnation, and helps the body push out the cold that has settled in. Research supports this. A 2022 study on moxibustion for cold-dampness knee arthritis found that moxibustion combined with other therapy improved joint function and reduced pain [citation:6]. Another 2016 study on electroacupuncture combined with thunder-fire moxibustion for knee osteoarthritis with cold-damp stagnation showed a 95% effective rate and a much lower recurrence rate at 6 months compared to acupuncture alone [citation:16].

If your joints feel better with heat, worse with cold and damp weather, and stiff in the morning, moxibustion is the traditional first choice.

Acupuncture: moving what is stuck

Acupuncture uses fine needles to stimulate specific points. Its strength is not just pain relief — it is moving what has become stuck.

For joint pain, HealthLink BC notes that acupuncture is used for chronic pain including low back pain, neck pain, and osteoarthritis pain [HealthLink BC]. The NCCIH also reports that acupuncture may help with chronic pain conditions, though research quality varies by condition [citation:5].

In our clinic, we often combine acupuncture with moxibustion. Acupuncture moves the stagnation. Moxibustion warms the area so the movement holds. For cold-damp joint pain, the combination is more effective than either alone.

If you have been noticing that your joints feel “locked” in the morning, or that the cold makes your whole body feel tighter, acupuncture can help release that pattern.

When to come in

Consider booking a consultation if:

  • Your joints feel stiffer and achier since the weather turned wet and cold.
  • You have an old injury that flares in cold, damp weather.
  • You feel cold deep in your body, especially in the lower back or knees, and warmth only helps temporarily.
  • Your sleep has become lighter, or you feel more tired than usual as the days shorten.

Frost Descent is the window before winter. The traditional approach is to warm the body now, so that the coldest months are easier. If you want to try moxibustion or acupuncture, a short consultation can tell you whether it fits your pattern.

If you are in Nanaimo, Lantzville, or Parksville and want to prepare your body for the cold season, book a consultation. No pressure. We will tell you honestly whether TCM is likely to help.

  • The amazing Shirley Brown goes the extra mile to help you to heal. Her initial assessment and history taking is incredibly thorough. Not only does she assess your medical and surgical history but also goes into indepth assessment of your usual diet .eating .sleeping patterns and your exercise routines . Shirley then can treat and heal you so much more profoundly . My first treatment with Shirley was with Moxinustion . Shirley used this to heal imbalances and to restore my energy system and then could prescribe what was needed to make me heal. I went for my first appointment feeling that I could not be healed or would have to wait months if not years to see a specialist. After seeing Shirley I left feeling lighter stronger and with definitely less pain and actual optimism and knew that I had been really cared for . I have been going to see Shirley for special teas she makes depending on what organ in my body needs the most attention . Shirley is a truly gifted healer and her knowledge of Chinese medicine is profound . Shirley truly excels in her profession.

I would highly recommend booking a consultation with Shirley. I met with Shirley in September and on that day she was able to assess my pulse with precision and identify where improvements could be made to support balancing my body. During my initial consultation, Shirley designed a three month treatment plan for me. At each appointment Shirley thoroughly assessed my progress as we worked in partnership to bring my body into balance. Shirley excels at Moxibustion and Tui Na, two therapies that I experienced during my treatment plan and I also followed all of the “homework” that she assigned me. I am very happy with the positive results that I experienced and again I would highly recommended booking a consultation with Shirley.

  • Shirley has helped me a great deal in improving my health. Being a Chinese from Hong Kong, I always trust TCM. Although I knew about moxa since I was a kid, I had never tried moxibustion before, until I met Shirley. I had encountered a medical issue in the past few years that none of my doctors and specialists could explain (or in their words "never heard of"). I had also tried cupping, Chinese massage and acupuncture. However, only after I started to have moxibustion and Shirley's five elements tea and herbal teas, I have experienced a huge improvement. As a matter of fact, many of the herbal teas that Shirley prescribes are actually very traditional recipes from the ancient Chinese medical records since thousands of years ago, which are commonly accessible online or on hard copies. However, to feel the pulse, check the body condition and then apply the right recipe for the treatment is utmost crucial and Shirley is proved to be able to do so. And I was told today that the official name of the clinic of "One More Cup of Tea" is "SLB Traditional Chinese Therapies" and there are a lot of information under that page. I am going to leave the exact same review under that name so nobody should miss it. Thank you Shirley.
