Winter Sleep Struggles Nanaimo: TCM and Acupuncture Relief

Why is it so hard to sleep in Nanaimo during winter? As the days get shorter and the rain sets in, our bodies naturally want to rest more. But artificial light and glowing screens keep our minds racing. When simple lifestyle changes aren’t enough, TCM therapies can help restore your natural rhythm.

The Start of Winter and Your Internal Clock

This Saturday, November 7th, marks Lidong (立冬)—the “Start of Winter” in the Chinese lunisolar calendar. This day officially signals the beginning of the cold season. As the temperature drops, our bodies naturally shift into a different mode.

In the grand ecology of our planet, all living things follow the rhythms of the solar system. Things sprout in spring, grow in summer, harvest in autumn, and store away in winter. Winter is nature’s season for rest and recovery.

If you found yourself feeling more drowsy in winter, or if you suddenly needed more sleep, do not worry. This is not abnormal. It is your body’s natural signal that it needs more time to repair itself and protect the kidneys.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the kidneys are considered the body’s “engine” for vital energy. There is an old wisdom that says we should be rising and resting with the sun. During the colder months, this means slowing down, stopping intense outdoor activities, and sleeping more to conserve our energy.

However, our modern lifestyle fights against this natural rhythm. We work long, unnatural hours, rely on artificial lighting, and live in manufactured time zones that keep us out of sync with the sun.

A Modern Mistake: Why You Shouldn’t Diet or Fast in Winter

One of the most common modern mistakes is the belief that we must diet, fast, or aggressively try to lose weight all year round. In traditional Chinese medicine, winter is absolutely not the time for aggressive weight loss.

Why? Because winter is the season of “storage.” If you restrict your food intake or exhaust yourself with intense workouts during the coldest months, you are draining your body’s reserves. This depletes your kidney energy and leaves you vulnerable to getting sick in spring.

Instead of restricting calories, you should focus on warming, nutrient-dense foods that build your blood and energy. This is because adequate nutrition provides the vital “Yang” energy needed to maintain normal metabolism during the cold months.

In summer, we absorb heat and Yang energy from plentiful sunlight. But in winter, as daylight hours shorten, our bodies need a different source of warmth. This is where winter moxibustion comes in.

Research published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) shows that moxibustion emits specific infrared radiation. The far-infrared heat generated by burning mugwort is remarkably similar to the natural heat produced by the human body itself, making it an excellent way to supplement your Yang energy from the outside in.

Whether you wanted to know exactly what to eat to maintain a healthy weight while nourishing your kidneys, or if you were interested in trying moxibustion, email or walk-in talking to us. Our registered TCM practitioners can provide personalized dietary advice and clinical treatments tailored to your body’s unique needs.

Favourite “Sleep Well” Tips

To help you transition from Fall to Winter and improve your sleep quality, here are a few of our favourite self-care tips:

  • Embrace the darkness: Dim the lights and turn off all screens at least 30 minutes before bed. Our modern brains need a cool, dark environment to produce melatonin.
  • Stop eating after 7 PM: Avoid heavy meals late at night to let your digestive system rest. Because an overworked stomach disrupts sleep. If you need to drink something, sip no more than 100 ml of warm water to keep your body hydrated without triggering a midnight bathroom trip.
  • The evening feet bath: A warm feet bath before bed is a traditional method to warm the feet and gently support kidneys function. As the warmth relaxes your feet and stimulates the acupoints (like Yongquan), the body’s focus shifts away from your busy mind, helping you feel grounded and ready for sleep.

When You Need More Than Just Sleep Hygiene

All that screen time adds “Fire” to our system—a restless energy that prevents the mind from shutting down. If you have tried the tips above, but you still find yourself staring at the ceiling at 3 AM, your body’s energy is likely out of balance.

This is where clinical therapies can make a profound difference.

Acupuncture for Insomnia: We use specific points to calm the nervous system and settle the Shen (Spirit). HealthLink BC notes that some people use acupuncture to help with sleep problems. This is highly effective for people whose minds race at night or who wake up frequently.

Moxibustion for Cold-Type Insomnia: Many people, especially seniors, suffer from poor sleep because they feel cold deep in their bones. Moxibustion provides a gentle, deep warmth that dispels this coldness, allowing the body to fully relax and stay asleep. A 2026 clinical trial published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that moxibustion significantly improved sleep quality in patients with insomnia.

In fact, the same cold that keeps you awake at night can also cause joint stiffness and body aches. If you are experiencing winter pain as well, read our guide on how moxibustion relieves winter pain.

• The amazing Shirley Brown goes the extra mile to help you to heal. Her initial assessment and history taking is incredibly thorough. Not only does she assess your medical and surgical history but also goes into indepth assessment of your usual diet .eating .sleeping patterns and your exercise routines . Shirley then can treat and heal you so much more profoundly . My first treatment with Shirley was with Moxinustion . Shirley used this to heal imbalances and to restore my energy system and then could prescribe what was needed to make me heal. I went for my first appointment feeling that I could not be healed or would have to wait months if not years to see a specialist. After seeing Shirley I left feeling lighter stronger and with definitely less pain and actual optimism and knew that I had been really cared for . I have been going to see Shirley for special teas she makes depending on what organ in my body needs the most attention . Shirley is a truly gifted healer and her knowledge of Chinese medicine is profound . Shirley truly excels in her profession.

I would highly recommend booking a consultation with Shirley. I met with Shirley in September and on that day she was able to assess my pulse with precision and identify where improvements could be made to support balancing my body. During my initial consultation, Shirley designed a three month treatment plan for me. At each appointment Shirley thoroughly assessed my progress as we worked in partnership to bring my body into balance. Shirley excels at Moxibustion and Tui Na, two therapies that I experienced during my treatment plan and I also followed all of the “homework” that she assigned me. I am very happy with the positive results that I experienced and again I would highly recommended booking a consultation with Shirley.

  • Shirley has helped me a great deal in improving my health. Being a Chinese from Hong Kong, I always trust TCM. Although I knew about moxa since I was a kid, I had never tried moxibustion before, until I met Shirley. I had encountered a medical issue in the past few years that none of my doctors and specialists could explain (or in their words "never heard of"). I had also tried cupping, Chinese massage and acupuncture. However, only after I started to have moxibustion and Shirley's five elements tea and herbal teas, I have experienced a huge improvement. As a matter of fact, many of the herbal teas that Shirley prescribes are actually very traditional recipes from the ancient Chinese medical records since thousands of years ago, which are commonly accessible online or on hard copies. However, to feel the pulse, check the body condition and then apply the right recipe for the treatment is utmost crucial and Shirley is proved to be able to do so. And I was told today that the official name of the clinic of "One More Cup of Tea" is "SLB Traditional Chinese Therapies" and there are a lot of information under that page. I am going to leave the exact same review under that name so nobody should miss it. Thank you Shirley.
