tapping the eight hollows herbal ingredients for herbal hammer.

What is the difference between tapping the Eight Hollows and lymphatic drainage? Both practices target the same areas: the major lymphatic hubs at the joints. However, they use different techniques. Tapping uses a rhythmic beat to stimulate circulation, while lymphatic drainage uses feather-light strokes to guide fluid. Understanding both helps you choose the right method for your body.

Tapping the Eight Hollows vs. Lymphatic Drainage: What’s the Difference?

If you are looking for natural ways to relieve stiffness and support your body’s circulation, you might have come across two popular practices: the traditional Daoist routine of tapping the “Eight Hollows” (Ba Xu), and modern lymphatic drainage. At first glance, they target the same areas. But they are based on different philosophies and use very different techniques.

The similarity: The same lymphatic hubs

Think of the joints in your body like a bay. Just as debris tends to gather in the calm waters of a bay rather than the open ocean, metabolic waste and fluids can easily accumulate in the joint depressions. In traditional self-care, these eight key areas are called the “Eight Hollows” (Ba Xu): the inner elbows, armpits, groin, and back of the knees .

Interestingly, modern anatomy shows that these exact same areas are the body’s major lymphatic hubs. The armpits and groin are the primary collection points for lymphatic fluid returning from the limbs and torso . Both practices recognize that these joint areas are critical for the body’s fluid balance.

Tapping the Eight Hollows: Stimulating the flow

In clinical practice, we often see specific symptoms develop in these joint areas when local circulation slows down. You may notice stiffness, a feeling of heaviness, or even mild swelling and soft nodules near the joints. These are common signs that fluids and waste products are pooling in the space .

The traditional approach of tapping uses a firm, rhythmic beat with an empty palm or a tool to physically vibrate the tissues. This stimulation helps to “wake up” the area, move qi and blood, and relieve that stuck, heavy feeling .

When you gently tap the Eight Hollows, you create a physical vibration that acts like a pump. This rhythmic pressure helps to stimulate local blood flow and encourages the body to move stagnant fluids out of the “bay” and back into circulation for elimination. It is a simple but effective daily habit to keep your joints feeling light and fluid.

Lymphatic Drainage: Guiding the fluid

Modern lymphatic drainage (MLD) has a different goal. The lymphatic system doesn’t have a heart to pump it; it relies entirely on muscle movement and gentle pressure. When you sit at a desk all day or feel stressed, this flow can slow down .

This is why the technique matters. If you want to support this drainage network, your touch must be as light as a feather. Lymphatic drainage uses extremely light, skin-stretching strokes to guide fluid toward the nodes. Pressing too hard can actually collapse the lymph vessels and block the flow .

Who is it for? Choosing the right method

Because they use different techniques, these two practices are suited for different people and different situations.

Who is Tapping (Ba Xu) for?
Tapping is excellent for people who feel physically stiff, achy, or “stuck.” If you sit at a desk all day, feel heavy in your joints, or experience muscular tension, a slightly firmer rhythmic tap helps wake up the tissues and relieve that heavy feeling. However, if you have severe swelling (edema) due to heart, kidney, or liver issues, you should avoid strong tapping and consult a doctor first.

Who is Lymphatic Drainage for?
This technique is ideal for people who feel puffy, sluggish, or are recovering from minor injuries. It is highly recommended for those who experience mild fluid retention (swelling in the ankles or hands) from sitting or standing too long. It is also great for people who feel stressed and need a deeply relaxing, calming routine.

The difference in effect:
Tapping creates a stimulating, “waking up” effect. It helps release muscle tension and gives you a gentle boost of energy.
Lymphatic drainage creates a calming, “flushing” effect. It focuses on reducing puffiness and supporting the body’s natural detoxification pathways.

The tools: Hands or herbal hammers

For daily self-care, you don’t need expensive equipment. Your hands are always available. For Daoist tapping, you can use a loose fist or an empty palm to gently tap the areas. The pressure should be comfortable, never hard enough to cause bruising .

However, many people prefer using a specially designed tool. An herbal tapping hammer is filled with warming herbs like mugwort. As you tap, the physical rhythm helps relieve tension, while the herbs release a comforting aroma that helps the mind relax. It is not just a tool for relief; it is a ritual for daily self-care.

Important: Avoid tapping if you have broken skin, a bleeding disorder, or are pregnant. For lymphatic drainage, use feather-light pressure only.

  • I would highly recommend booking a consultation with Shirley. I met with Shirley in September and on that day she was able to assess my pulse with precision and identify where improvements could be made to support balancing my body. During my initial consultation, Shirley designed a three month treatment plan for me. At each appointment Shirley thoroughly assessed my progress as we worked in partnership to bring my body into balance. Shirley excels at Moxibustion and Tui Na, two therapies that I experienced during my treatment plan and I also followed all of the “homework” that she assigned me. I am very happy with the positive results that I experienced and again I would highly recommended booking a consultation with Shirley.

Shirley has helped me a great deal in improving my health. Being a Chinese from Hong Kong, I always trust TCM. Although I knew about moxa since I was a kid, I had never tried moxibustion before, until I met Shirley. I had encountered a medical issue in the past few years that none of my doctors and specialists could explain (or in their words "never heard of"). I had also tried cupping, Chinese massage and acupuncture. However, only after I started to have moxibustion and Shirley's five elements tea and herbal teas, I have experienced a huge improvement. As a matter of fact, many of the herbal teas that Shirley prescribes are actually very traditional recipes from the ancient Chinese medical records since thousands of years ago, which are commonly accessible online or on hard copies. However, to feel the pulse, check the body condition and then apply the right recipe for the treatment is utmost crucial and Shirley is proved to be able to do so. And I was told today that the official name of the clinic of "One More Cup of Tea" is "SLB Traditional Chinese Therapies" and there are a lot of information under that page. I am going to leave the exact same review under that name so nobody should miss it. Thank you Shirley.

The amazing Shirley Brown goes the extra mile to help you to heal. Her initial assessment and history taking is incredibly thorough. Not only does she assess your medical and surgical history but also goes into indepth assessment of your usual diet .eating .sleeping patterns and your exercise routines . Shirley then can treat and heal you so much more profoundly . My first treatment with Shirley was with Moxinustion . Shirley used this to heal imbalances and to restore my energy system and then could prescribe what was needed to make me heal. I went for my first appointment feeling that I could not be healed or would have to wait months if not years to see a specialist. After seeing Shirley I left feeling lighter stronger and with definitely less pain and actual optimism and knew that I had been really cared for . I have been going to see Shirley for special teas she makes depending on what organ in my body needs the most attention . Shirley is a truly gifted healer and her knowledge of Chinese medicine is profound . Shirley truly excels in her profession.
