How do emotions affect your body? In TCM, emotions are not just in your head. They affect your organ systems directly. Long-term sadness drains your energy. Anger affects your digestion. Fear scatters your spirit. Anxiety clouds your mind. Overthinking slows your gut. Each emotion has a physical footprint — and each one can be addressed.

How Emotions Affect Your Body: A TCM Guide

You already know that stress can make you feel tired. You know that anger can make your chest tight. You know that sadness can make your whole body heavy. But in TCM, these are not just figures of speech. They are descriptions of how emotions move through your organ systems. Each emotion has a specific effect on a specific part of your body. And when an emotion lasts too long, it leaves a mark.

Why emotions affect your organs

In TCM, each emotion is linked to a specific organ system. This is not a metaphor. It is a way of describing how emotional states change the way your body functions — your digestion, your sleep, your circulation, your energy.

When an emotion is brief, the effect is brief. You get angry, your chest tightens, and then it passes. But when an emotion becomes a long-term state — weeks, months, years — the effect becomes structural. The organ system stays in that pattern, and physical symptoms start to appear.

Here are the five most common emotional patterns we see in our Nanaimo clinic.

Handwritten notes showing how emotions connect to different body areas.

Long-term sadness → fatigue and pale complexion

Sadness and grief consume qi. When you are sad for a long time, your body’s energy is drained. You feel tired even after sleep. Your complexion becomes pale or dull. You may lose your appetite or feel emotionally flat.

This pattern is often related to Heart and Spleen deficiency. The body no longer has enough energy to produce blood and circulate it properly.

In our clinic, we see this most often after a major loss — a death, a divorce, a job change, or a long period of disappointment. The emotional weight has become a physical one.

Long-term anger → stomach pain and tight chest

Anger affects the Liver. In TCM, the Liver is responsible for the smooth flow of energy throughout the body. When anger is held in or expressed repeatedly, the Liver’s energy becomes stuck. This is called Liver qi stagnation.

When Liver qi is stuck, it can “invade” the Stomach. That is why people who are chronically angry or frustrated often have digestive issues: stomach pain, bloating, acid reflux, or irritable bowel symptoms. They may also feel a tight chest, sigh often, or have tension in their shoulders and jaw.

This is not “just stress.” It is a specific pattern that responds to specific treatment.

Long-term fear → scattered mind and weak lower back

Fear affects the Kidney. In TCM, the Kidney stores your essence and governs your willpower and sense of security. When fear becomes a long-term state — anxiety about money, health, safety, or the future — the Kidney’s energy becomes depleted.

You may feel scattered, unable to focus, or “not all there.” Your lower back may ache. You may urinate more frequently. You may feel cold, especially in your hands, feet, and lower body. Your willpower feels weak.

This pattern is common in people who have lived through prolonged uncertainty or who carry a constant background sense of threat.

Long-term anxiety → forgetfulness and poor sleep

Anxiety affects the Heart and Spleen. The Heart houses the mind, and the Spleen produces the blood that nourishes it. When anxiety is constant, the Heart’s energy is consumed, and the Spleen cannot keep up.

You may feel forgetful, have difficulty concentrating, or find that your mind goes blank under pressure. At night, you may lie awake with a racing mind. You may wake up frequently or feel unrefreshed in the morning.

This is not a memory problem. It is a depletion pattern that affects both mind and body.

Long-term overthinking → poor digestion

Overthinking and worry affect the Spleen. In TCM, the Spleen is responsible for transforming food into energy. When you overthink, your energy is directed upward to your head instead of downward to your digestion.

You may lose your appetite, feel bloated after small meals, or have loose stools. You may feel mentally foggy and physically heavy. This is a common pattern in people who are constantly planning, analyzing, or worrying about outcomes they cannot control.

Joy is the best medicine

woman smiling quietly by a window, calm and content

In Chinese tradition, joy is considered the greatest tonic. Not the fleeting excitement of a good moment, but the steady, grounded sense of contentment that comes from feeling safe, connected, and at ease.

When joy is present, the Heart is calm, the Liver moves freely, the Spleen digests well, and the Kidney holds steady. The body does not need to defend itself. It can rest, repair, and restore.

This is why, in TCM, we do not only treat symptoms. We ask what is keeping you from joy. Sometimes the answer is physical — a depleted organ system that needs support. Sometimes it is emotional — a situation that needs to change. Often, it is both.

What you can do

If you recognize yourself in one or more of these patterns, there are simple things you can try first:

  • Notice the emotion without judging it. The first step is simply to see the pattern. You do not have to fix it immediately.
  • Support the affected organ system. If your digestion is affected, eat warm, cooked food. If your sleep is affected, go to bed before 11 PM. If your lower back feels weak, keep your lower body warm.
  • Move your body daily. Gentle movement — walking, stretching, qigong — helps move stuck energy and calm a scattered mind.
  • Consider herbal support. For specific patterns, Chinese herbal formulas can help restore balance. For general guidance, see our herbal guides.

When to see a practitioner

If you have been living with one of these emotional patterns for more than a few weeks, or if physical symptoms are starting to appear, a short consultation can help. In our clinic, we use acupuncture and herbal formulas to address both the emotional pattern and its physical effects.

If you are already taking medication for anxiety, depression, or another mood condition, do not stop it on your own. A practitioner can work alongside your doctor to support you safely.

If you are in Nanaimo, Lantzville, or Parksville and want to understand what your emotions are doing to your body, book a short consultation. No pressure. We will tell you honestly whether TCM is likely to help.

✨ What Our Clients Say

  • I would highly recommend booking a consultation with Shirley. I met with Shirley in September and on that day she was able to assess my pulse with precision and identify where improvements could be made to support balancing my body. During my initial consultation, Shirley designed a three month treatment plan for me. At each appointment Shirley thoroughly assessed my progress as we worked in partnership to bring my body into balance. Shirley excels at Moxibustion and Tui Na, two therapies that I experienced during my treatment plan and I also followed all of the “homework” that she assigned me. I am very happy with the positive results that I experienced and again I would highly recommended booking a consultation with Shirley.

I started seeing Shirley in September 2024 when I knew I needed to do more to support my health. Shirley is so knowledgeable and is able to pinpoint things that need attention. Things Western Medicine misses. I am happy to report my blood pressure is down and stabilizing from her treatments and tea. I highly recommend Shirley!

Shirley has helped me a great deal in improving my health. Being a Chinese from Hong Kong, I always trust TCM. Although I knew about moxa since I was a kid, I had never tried moxibustion before, until I met Shirley. I had encountered a medical issue in the past few years that none of my doctors and specialists could explain (or in their words "never heard of"). I had also tried cupping, Chinese massage and acupuncture. However, only after I started to have moxibustion and Shirley's five elements tea and herbal teas, I have experienced a huge improvement. As a matter of fact, many of the herbal teas that Shirley prescribes are actually very traditional recipes from the ancient Chinese medical records since thousands of years ago, which are commonly accessible online or on hard copies. However, to feel the pulse, check the body condition and then apply the right recipe for the treatment is utmost crucial and Shirley is proved to be able to do so. And I was told today that the official name of the clinic of "One More Cup of Tea" is "SLB Traditional Chinese Therapies" and there are a lot of information under that page. I am going to leave the exact same review under that name so nobody should miss it. Thank you Shirley.

  • The amazing Shirley Brown goes the extra mile to help you to heal. Her initial assessment and history taking is incredibly thorough. Not only does she assess your medical and surgical history but also goes into indepth assessment of your usual diet .eating .sleeping patterns and your exercise routines . Shirley then can treat and heal you so much more profoundly . My first treatment with Shirley was with Moxinustion . Shirley used this to heal imbalances and to restore my energy system and then could prescribe what was needed to make me heal. I went for my first appointment feeling that I could not be healed or would have to wait months if not years to see a specialist. After seeing Shirley I left feeling lighter stronger and with definitely less pain and actual optimism and knew that I had been really cared for . I have been going to see Shirley for special teas she makes depending on what organ in my body needs the most attention . Shirley is a truly gifted healer and her knowledge of Chinese medicine is profound . Shirley truly excels in her profession.
