Explaining post-moxibustion symptoms

Post-Moxibustion Reactions: Complete Guide to Healing Responses & Detox Symptoms

Quick Guide: Experiencing unusual symptoms after moxibustion therapy? Don’t worry—these are often positive signs that your body is detoxifying, rebalancing, and healing.

This comprehensive guide explains common post-moxibustion reactions and what they mean. Jump to the section that interests you most:

If you’re experiencing strong or persistent reactions, consider consulting a certified moxibustion practitioner or TCM doctor for personalized guidance.

The Battle Between Healthy Qi and Pathogens

When pathogens have resided in the body for a long time, they don’t leave easily. Moxibustion stimulates healthy qi to expel these pathogens, triggering resistance and temporary aggravation.

When healthy qi is insufficient and pathogenic qi is strong, various discomforts may appear—this is the phenomenon of “righteous qi battling evil qi.”

As moxibustion continues and healthy qi accumulates, the worsening of symptoms or physical discomfort gradually disappears. This is the process of pathogens being gradually expelled from the body.

Detox Reactions: Cold, Damp, Heat & Toxin Release

Expelling Wind and Cold

Many patients experience reactions indicating the expulsion of wind-cold after moxibustion, often appearing as sneezing, runny nose, cold-like symptoms, sore throat, joint pain, flatulence, or sensations of cold air escaping from the head or limb extremities.

Some may even experience full-body or half-body chills that don’t improve even with multiple blankets, while body temperature remains normal. These reactions typically last from 1-2 days to half a month.

As a registered TCM practitioner, in my clinical practice, I’ve observed numerous cases where patients experience various reactions after moxibustion.

Below are two particularly illustrative examples that demonstrate how the body communicates its healing process through symptoms.

Professional moxibustion therapy in clinical setting - explaining post-moxibustion symptoms.

📌 Case Study: Migratory Cold Sensation Resolution

Patient: 62-year-old female with congenital weak constitution reporting migratory cold sensations between abdomen and lower abdomen.

Post-Moxibustion Symptoms: Initially felt cold exiting through fingers/toes. After several sessions, cold movement decreased. One night experienced sensation of “cool liquid flowing from vagina” without physical discharge. Next morning: complete resolution of abdominal cold.

Clinical Insight: This demonstrates deep-seated cold expulsion. Such post-moxibustion symptoms indicate pathogenic cold transforming and exiting—a positive healing sign.

Metabolizing Phlegm-Dampness

The release of phlegm-dampness often manifests as increased coughing, more phlegm, vomiting, excessive saliva, abdominal pain, diarrhea, watery stools, sticky cold-like stools, facial and limb edema, half-body swelling.

Or even full-body edema, difficulty urinating, frequent cloudy and pungent urination, and localized or full-body cold, sticky sweating.

The moxibustion sensation may change from initially dull to sensitive.

Releasing Heat-Fire Toxins

Post-moxibustion release of heat-fire toxins often appears as skin ulcers, abscesses, fever, eczema-like eruptions with intense itching, facial or body papules, recurrence of previously healed pus-filled sores, and burning sensations during urination or bowel movements.

Rest assured—these symptoms indicate thorough expulsion of pathogens.

Note: Eczema-like eruptions with intense itching are specifically mentioned as a common heat-toxin release reaction.

📌 Case Study: Skin Rash Manifestation

Patient: 45-year-old male with fatigue, bloating, and intermittent calf rashes.

Post-Moxibustion Symptoms: After 3 sessions, large red rashes appeared in armpits with mild itching—classic heat-toxin expulsion via Liver meridian.

Clinical Insight: These cutaneous post-moxibustion symptoms represent internal damp-heat expulsion. The axillary location corresponds to Liver channel pathway.

Sleep Pattern Changes

Insomnia is common after moxibustion. Initial sessions may cause insomnia accompanied by fatigue and weakness, or conversely, excessive sleepiness.

After continued treatment, even with less sleep, people often feel energetic rather than fatigued. Don’t worry about reduced sleep duration or force yourself to sleep longer—your sleep pattern will normalize naturally.

Channel Movement Phenomenon

Sometimes when applying moxibustion to Zhongwan (CV12), discomfort may appear in the liver area or stomach region.

This suggests existing liver or stomach imbalances, as moxibustion actively helps the body self-regulate—this is its channel-moving function.

The human body has self-regulating capabilities that, when properly activated, can self-repair. For example, moxibustion on Guanyuan (CV4) may reveal gynecological, prostate, or reproductive system issues.

The rise and fall of yin-yang follows inherent patterns. As primordial qi increases, yin-yang naturally adjusts—rising and descending appropriately without artificial manipulation.

Pain in Previously Pain-Free Areas

This occurs because previous conditions were in a “pathological balance.” For example, with frozen shoulder: initially painful, then painless but with limited mobility.

After moxibustion, pain may return as the treatment breaks the pathological balance, causing “qi rushing to the lesion” where blockages exist.

Gynecological Reactions

Early or Delayed Menstruation: Moxibustion primarily affects reproductive systems. During the first 3 months (adjustment period), periods may come earlier or later.

Genital Itching, Increased Discharge, or Blood Clots: For those with pre-existing gynecological issues or irregular periods, temporary menstrual disturbances may occur.

This indicates blood and qi adjustment or relates to yin-deficient, heat-excessive constitutions. Continuing moxibustion for 3 months typically brings normalization.

Non-Menstrual Bleeding, Blood Clots, or Irregular Cycles: These indicate expulsion of uterine stasis, usually normalizing within 2-3 months.

Vaginal Itching, Red Rashes, Increased Odorous Discharge: Signs of dampness expulsion, Your practitioner would increase moxibustion intensity to help completely excreted from the body.

Genital Itching, Increased Discharge, or Blood Clots (repeated for emphasis): During menstrual adjustment for those with gynecological issues, temporary irregularities may occur.

Additional Reactions: Emotional Release & Digestive Adjustments

Emotional Waves: Some experience mood swings, unexplained tears, irritability, or emotional releases as moxibustion regulates liver qi and releases stored emotional stress—a positive mind-body healing sign.

Understanding Emotional Release in TCM: The human body is an incredible living system where the seven emotions—joy, anger, worry, pensiveness, grief, fear, and fright—are normal physiological expressions that can be self-regulated.

In modern civilization, people often either over-control or lose control of their emotions. Over time, this natural regulatory mechanism becomes imbalanced.

Under the gentle, warm stimulation of moxibustion, the body gradually restores its intrinsic regulatory capacity. Emotions that should have been expressed at appropriate times may surface during or after treatment.

This represents a positive rebalancing process—there’s no need to fear losing emotional control.

Clinical Observations: In actual clinical practice, most patients report feeling more peaceful and secure during moxibustion sessions.

Many enter a state of deep relaxation or unintentionally fall asleep. For those with anxiety or depression, symptoms often gradually lessen or disappear entirely.

Some patients only realize weeks later that their anxiety or depressive episodes have ceased or occur with significantly longer intervals between episodes.

Digestive Shifts: Bloating, gas, appetite changes, or altered stool consistency indicate spleen and stomach activation. Support with light, easily digestible meals.

When to Seek Professional Guidance

Most moxibustion reactions are temporary and positive. However, consult a certified moxibustion practitioner or TCM doctor if you experience:

  • Severe pain or discomfort lasting over 48 hours
  • High fever (over 38.5°C/101.3°F)
  • Severe skin reactions like intense eczema or rashes
  • Heavy or prolonged non-menstrual bleeding
  • Palpitations, dizziness, or shortness of breath
  • Uncertainty about your reactions

An experienced practitioner can assess your unique reactions, adjust treatment, and ensure a safer healing journey.

• I would highly recommend booking a consultation with Shirley. I met with Shirley in September and on that day she was able to assess my pulse with precision and identify where improvements could be made to support balancing my body. During my initial consultation, Shirley designed a three month treatment plan for me. At each appointment Shirley thoroughly assessed my progress as we worked in partnership to bring my body into balance. Shirley excels at Moxibustion and Tui Na, two therapies that I experienced during my treatment plan and I also followed all of the “homework” that she assigned me. I am very happy with the positive results that I experienced and again I would highly recommended booking a consultation with Shirley.

Shirley has helped me a great deal in improving my health. Being a Chinese from Hong Kong, I always trust TCM. Although I knew about moxa since I was a kid, I had never tried moxibustion before, until I met Shirley. I had encountered a medical issue in the past few years that none of my doctors and specialists could explain (or in their words "never heard of"). I had also tried cupping, Chinese massage and acupuncture. However, only after I started to have moxibustion and Shirley's five elements tea and herbal teas, I have experienced a huge improvement. As a matter of fact, many of the herbal teas that Shirley prescribes are actually very traditional recipes from the ancient Chinese medical records since thousands of years ago, which are commonly accessible online or on hard copies. However, to feel the pulse, check the body condition and then apply the right recipe for the treatment is utmost crucial and Shirley is proved to be able to do so. And I was told today that the official name of the clinic of "One More Cup of Tea" is "SLB Traditional Chinese Therapies" and there are a lot of information under that page. I am going to leave the exact same review under that name so nobody should miss it. Thank you Shirley.

  • The amazing Shirley Brown goes the extra mile to help you to heal. Her initial assessment and history taking is incredibly thorough. Not only does she assess your medical and surgical history but also goes into indepth assessment of your usual diet .eating .sleeping patterns and your exercise routines . Shirley then can treat and heal you so much more profoundly . My first treatment with Shirley was with Moxinustion . Shirley used this to heal imbalances and to restore my energy system and then could prescribe what was needed to make me heal. I went for my first appointment feeling that I could not be healed or would have to wait months if not years to see a specialist. After seeing Shirley I left feeling lighter stronger and with definitely less pain and actual optimism and knew that I had been really cared for . I have been going to see Shirley for special teas she makes depending on what organ in my body needs the most attention . Shirley is a truly gifted healer and her knowledge of Chinese medicine is profound . Shirley truly excels in her profession.
